We are happy to announce that Joe Merkel, Associate Art Director at HarperCollins Children’s Books, will be returning for Illustration Essentials: Pro Tips to Make Your Art Director Happy Part 3!

Whereas Part 1 and Part 2 consisted of learning about industry picture book design standards with a final critique component, Part 3 will include the following:

  • $20 registration fee for attendees who would like a critique of their revised pieces from Part 2
  • $10 registration fee for non-critique viewers
  • In addition to critiques during the Zoom session, Joe Merkel (from HarperCollins) will be showing examples of books, page turns, and sequences that are successful and why. This will be very valuable!

Additional Information:

  • Submissions for critiques should consist of your three(3) spreads from Part 2 where you have revised after receiving Joe’s feedback last November.
  • Some of the attendees who had signed up for a critique in Part 2 but weren’t able to turn in anything by the deadline are definitely able to submit their three pieces for Part 3. If you are one of the people in this situation and paid for Parts 1 and Part 2 but DID NOT do a Part 2 critique, please email us separately.
  • Please turn in your work for the critique by April 10th to We will again be sending everyone’s illustrations to Joe in advance so he can compile feedback prior to the live Part 3 session.

Please Note: This is a password-protected private registration page only for this group, so please do not share this with anyone else.

Depending on the number of participants, the timeframe may be adjusted to accommodate the amount of critiques. We hope having the event in April will give everyone enough time to prepare for the workshop.

Side note: some of you were also interested in a full dummy critique. This will be a separate engagement that Joe Merkel is happy to do. More information will come in a separate email.

If you have any questions, please email! We’re excited to offer this Part 3 workshop and hope you will find it beneficial!
