This month we welcome three debut authors for a special panel on picture books!

M.O. Yuksel, Nadia Salomon, and Kari Lavelle are all celebrating their first book birthdays in 2021! They will speak together about their publication journeys, writing processes, and the inspirations behind their debut picture books.

M.O. Yuksel is the author of In My Mosque (HarperCollins 2021), and upcoming picture book, ONE WISH (HarperCollins, 2022), a biography about a 9th-century Muslim woman who pioneered the oldest university in the world in Fez, Morocco. M.O. Yuksel is a Muslim-American who was born in Turkey and grew up in NYC.  When not writing, she is usually on the soccer field cheering for her kids, or traveling to exotic places, and immersing herself in the local culture.

Nadia Salomon is the author of Goodnight Ganesha (Philomel 2021) and lives in northern California with her family. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and Public Policy from Emerson College and has worked in television and print news. She writes picture book, middle-grade, and graphic novel manuscripts with themes of South Asian and Caribbean culture, STEM, non-fiction, and humor. Nadia is the winner of the 2020 SCBWI Service Award and the 2019 SCBWI WOOP Honor Award for work of outstanding progress on her non-fiction, picture book manuscript, MYRLIE: A VOICE OF HOPE.

Kari Lavelle is the author of We Move the World (HarperCollins 2021), and a not-yet-announced picture book biography. She has always had a love for words: as a kid reading books, as a speech pathologist helping children communicate, and now as a writer creating stories. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, two kids, and two dogs.
