BRINGING RESEARCH TO LIFE IN FICTION AND NONFICTION

Nonfiction and many types of fiction need research, but where do you start, and what do you do with it all? Join authors Rebecca E.F. Barone, Kathy Cannon Wiechman, and Annette Whipple for a panel discussion moderated by Tracy Vonder Brink on what research techniques work best for them and how they shape that research to make their writing come alive.

Annette Whipple celebrates curiosity and inspires a sense of wonder while exciting readers about science and history. She’s the author of ten fact-filled children’s books including The Laura Ingalls Wilder Companion: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide (Chicago Review Press) and Whooo Knew? The Truth About Owls (Reycraft Books) in The Truth About series. Get to know Annette and explore her resources for writers at www.AnnetteWhipple.com and on Twitter at @AnnetteWhipple.

Kathy Cannon Wiechman writes historical fiction and was awarded the Grateful American Book Prize for her Civil War novel, Like a River. Her novels Empty Places and Not on Fifth Street take place during the 1930s. Kathy’s goal is to bring yesterday to life for today’s readers. You can learn more at kathycannonwiechman.com or on Twitter at @KathyCWiechman.

As an engineer, Rebecca E. F. Barone has worked on projects ranging from injury analysis for the NFL to engine calibration for hybrid cars. Realizing her love of books in addition to numbers, she now describes the world with words rather than equations. Her debut, Race to the Bottom of the Earth: Surviving Antarctica, received four starred reviews, and her second book, Unbreakable: The Spies Who Broke the Nazis’ Secret Code, will be published on Nov. 1, 2022. Connect with her at www.rebeccaefbarone.com or on Twitter at @rebeccaefbarone.

Tracy Vonder Brink is a contributing editor for Click, ASK, and Muse, Cricket Media’s three science magazines for kids. She’s authored more than 60 articles for kids and 40 nonfiction books for the educational market.
