BRINGING RESEARCH TO LIFE IN FICTION AND NONFICTION
Nonfiction and many types of fiction need research, but where do you start, and what do you do with it all? Join authors Rebecca E.F. Barone, Kathy Cannon Wiechman, and Annette Whipple for a panel discussion moderated by Tracy Vonder Brink on what research techniques work best for them and how they shape that research to make their writing come alive.
Annette Whipple celebrates curiosity and inspires a sense of wonder while exciting readers about science and history. She’s the author of ten fact-filled children’s books including The Laura Ingalls Wilder Companion: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide (Chicago Review Press) and Whooo Knew? Kathy Cannon Wiechman writes historical fiction and was awarded the Grateful American Book Prize for her Civil War novel, Like a River. Her novels Empty Places and Not on Fifth Street take place during the 1930s. Kathy’s goal is to bring yesterday to life for today’s readers. As an engineer, Rebecca E. F. Barone has worked on projects ranging from injury analysis for the NFL to engine calibration for hybrid cars. Realizing her love of books in addition to numbers, she now describes the world with words rather than equations. Her debut, Race to the Bottom of the Earth: Surviving Antarctica, received four starred reviews, and her second book, Unbreakable: The Spies Who Broke the Nazis’ Secret Code, will be published on Nov. 1, 2022.
