This month we welcome five authors for a special panel:

Middle Grade Fantasy: The Debut Author Journey

Rina Heisel, Payal Doshi, Alysa Wishingrad, Sam Subity, and Lisa Frenkel Riddiough have all released middle grade fantasy novels in 2021. They will speak about their debut experiences, as well as how and why they love writing fantasy novels for kids.

Rina Heisel has written the scripts for many natural science-themed documentaries and magazine segments, and Journey Beyond the Burrow is her first novel. Rina lives in Minnesota with her family and is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Payal Doshi has a Master’s in Creative Writing from The New School, NY. Having lived in India, the UK, and US, she noticed a lack of Indian protagonists in children’s fiction. She currently lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband and three-year-old daughter. Learn more at www.payaldoshiauthor.com, @payaldoshiauthor on Instagram and @payaldwrites on Twitter.

Alysa Wishingrad has been telling stories for her entire life, first through theater, film and TV, and now through books for middle-grade readers. She lives in the Hudson Valley of NY with her family and two very demanding dogs. You can visit her at: www.alysawishingrad,com , @alysawishingradwrites on Instagram and @agwishingrad on Twitter.

Sam Subity loves writing stories that explore the magic and wonder of being a kid and is thrilled to share his writing with readers everywhere—both the young in age and the young at heart. When he’s not writing, you might find him running the trails of northern California where the endless, winding miles past fog and ocean inspire stories of adventure and mystery.

Lisa Frenkel Riddiough is a Northern California-based writer whose projects include picture books, middle grade, and short stories. She earned her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University, spends countless hours watching her backyard squirrels, and is a frequent baker of chocolate pound cake. Also, she likes exclamation points!!
