Writing STEM (When You’re Not a Scientist)

The need for STEM is on the rise, both in trade and in the educational market, but does a nonfiction writer need a science degree to write it successfully? What about a fiction writer who’d like to use science concepts in their work but who has no science background? Writing STEM (When You’re Not a Scientist) says yes, YOU can! The talk is full of practical tips on where to start, how to research and write STEM as a non-scientist, and how to find confidence in yourself and your skills.

Tracy Vonder Brink is a contributing editor for Click, ASK, and Muse, Cricket Media’s three science magazines for kids, and is also a freelance writer. She’s authored more than 60 STEM articles for kids and 20 nonfiction books for the educational market. In 2020, Tracy was the recipient of the AAAS Kavli Gold Award for Excellence in Reporting Children’s Science News. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio—and has no science degrees.
